UK Security Minister Praised Israel’s Democratic Values on Day Ben Gvir Flotilla Video Emerged
British Security Minister Dan Jarvis delivered a tribute to Israel’s “commitment to robust democratic governance, rule of law, and judicial independence” at an event marking Israel’s 78th independence day on Wednesday, May 20 โ the same day that footage of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir taunting bound and kneeling flotilla detainees went viral and drew international condemnation. The following day, Britain’s Foreign Office summoned Israel’s most senior diplomat in London, Chargรฉ d’Affaires Daniela Grudsky Ekstein, over the incident.
According to a report in Jewish News, Jarvis said the Labour Party “has long been an advocate of the Jewish state,” adding: “Together we share a commitment to robust democratic governance, rule of law, and judicial independence โฆ and an unwavering dedication to defending our open societies against security threats.” middleeasteye
The event was also attended by Jon Pearce, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s parliamentary private secretary and a former chair of Labour Friends of Israel.
The timing of the remarks produced immediate political friction. On the same evening Jarvis delivered his video address, Ben Gvir posted footage of himself standing above dozens of bound activists kneeling on the ground at the port of Ashdod, waving a large Israeli flag and shouting in Hebrew, “Welcome to Israel! We are in charge here!” as Israel’s national anthem was blasted over a loudspeaker. He was also heard urging guards “not to be bothered by their screams” as a woman cried out in the background. The British Foreign Office summoned Grudsky Ekstein the following morning, confirming she had been called in as the most senior Israeli diplomat in the UK. “The summoning reflects the UK’s strong condemnation of his conduct in taunting those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla,” a spokesperson said. “This behaviour violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity for people.” GB News
The Foreign Office added that Britain was deeply concerned about the detention conditions shown in what appeared to be a makeshift holding area at Ashdod and had demanded an explanation from Israeli authorities. ITV News
The two positions โ a minister praising Israeli democratic values on the same day the Foreign Office was preparing to summon a diplomat over a flagrant abuse of detainees โ placed London’s divided posture toward Israel into sharp relief. Britain condemned Ben Gvir’s conduct through formal diplomatic channels while a cabinet-level minister simultaneously attended a celebration of the Israeli state.
Israeli naval forces had intercepted the flotilla’s vessels in international waters off the coast of Cyprus, detaining 430 participants from more than 40 countries. The Israeli Foreign Ministry described the Global Sumud Flotilla as a publicity stunt intended to “serve Hamas” and said seizing the vessels was necessary to uphold Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, which has been in place since 2007. The abuse allegations against Israeli forces extended well beyond Ben Gvir’s video. The Global Sumud Flotilla’s organisers said they had documented at least 15 cases of sexual abuse, with the worst occurring on a vessel converted into a makeshift prison. Activists reported being locked in containers and beaten by soldiers, suffering fractures to ribs and arms, and sustaining serious injuries to their eyes and ears caused by tasers. Detainees reportedly spent two days on the prison ships with no running water, no blankets, and stripped of most of their clothing. Al Jazeera
The Israel Prison Service denied all allegations, stating that activists were held “in accordance with the law, with full regard for their basic rights” and received necessary and professional medical care. Reuters noted it was unable to independently verify the activists’ claims. Rome prosecutors announced they were investigating the possible crimes of kidnapping, torture, and sexual assault, and would hear testimony from Italian activists who had returned home. The international response to the Ben Gvir video was broad and swift. Within hours of its release, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands summoned Israeli ambassadors to seek explanations for the treatment of their nationals. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the treatment of the activists violated their human dignity. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sรกnchez said his government would not tolerate anyone mistreating Spanish citizens and vowed to push the European Union to sanction Ben Gvir. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee wrote on X that Ben Gvir had “betrayed dignity of his nation.” NBC NewsCNN
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a rare public reprimand of one of his own ministers. He said Israel had every right to prevent “provocative flotillas of Hamas terrorist supporters” from reaching Gaza, but that the way Ben Gvir handled the activists was “not in line with Israel’s values and norms.” Netanyahu said he had instructed the relevant authorities to deport the activists as soon as possible. At the independence day event in London, Grudsky Ekstein herself denounced Ben Gvir’s behaviour and told attendees that “the unacceptable, harmful conduct of one of our ministers is not representative of our government’s policy. It is not the face of Israel.” middleeasteye
The episode brings into focus the particular awkwardness of the UK-Israel relationship under the current Labour government. Britain has cooperated militarily with Israel throughout the conflict in Gaza, with RAF planes conducting hundreds of surveillance flights over the territory. The Ministry of Defence has insisted the flights were solely in support of hostage rescue operations. A secret military agreement signed between the UK and Israel in 2020, described at the time as formalising and enhancing the defence partnership, remained in place as of October 2025, according to the Ministry of Defence. middleeasteyemiddleeasteye
There is currently no Israeli ambassador in London. Former Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely ended her term in September 2025. Her designated successor, Tzachi Braverman, who was Prime Minister Netanyahu’s former chief of staff, became embroiled in a domestic Israeli scandal after being accused of obstructing an investigation into leaks of classified information during the war on Gaza. In February 2026, Israel’s civil service disciplinary division recommended suspending him for six months. middleeasteye
The 430 detainees were deported to Istanbul on Thursday evening, May 21. Several were carried off planes on stretchers, and Germany confirmed that some of its nationals returned with injuries requiring medical inspection. Formal parliamentary questions on the UK government’s position are expected when the Commons next sits. The Foreign Office has indicated it is continuing to demand a full explanation from Israeli authorities regarding the detention conditions and the conduct of Israeli personnel during the operation.
