Hegseth Warns Europe of Immigration at D-Day Event

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth used the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings to warn European allies that the continent faces what he described as an invasion of dangerous ideologies arriving by sea, drawing a direct parallel between World War II and contemporary immigration. Hegseth delivered the remarks on Saturday, June 6, at a commemoration ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. He also called on Europe to take primary responsibility for its own conventional military defence.

“Sadly, today, different European beaches are stormed by different, dangerous ideologies. Beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria, boats and men arrive,” Hegseth said in his speech at the ceremony, according to Reuters.

On his arrival in Normandy, Hegseth told reporters that “Europe must be the first to provide for its own conventional defence.” During a bilateral meeting that included French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin, he called on “allies such as France to face up seriously to this reality and to show it through concrete progress,” Euronews reported.

Vautrin’s response was direct. She confirmed that France was engaged in a “rearmament drive,” according to Euronews.

Hegseth’s remarks echo criticisms frequently made by the administration of President Donald Trump about Europe — a region Washington argues is hampered by weak defences, inability to tackle immigration, needless red tape, and what the administration has characterised as censorship of far-right and nationalist voices, according to Reuters.

The ceremony at Colleville-sur-Mer marked the 82nd anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, which liberated German-occupied Western Europe during World War II, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Hegseth represented the Trump administration at the event, attending as the president’s designated envoy.

The visit was not without controversy on the ground. Residents of the Normandy village of Langrune-sur-Mer called for the cancellation of Hegseth’s appearance, with locals stating that “this individual promotes values that go against democracy, human rights and peace,” according to The Connexion. Locals were not permitted to attend the ceremony, with heightened security measures put in place for the event.

Regional and Global Impact

The remarks come after Washington announced a reduction in the number of American troops stationed in Europe, a decision that has increased pressure on NATO allies to expand their own defence budgets and capabilities, Euronews reported.

At the end of May, during a visit to Singapore, Hegseth had already reproached Europeans for having “for too long” ignored calls to strengthen their defences, according to Euronews. The Normandy address repeated and sharpened that message in front of an audience of European officials gathered for the commemoration.

The pairing of immigration rhetoric with a ceremony honouring Allied war dead drew attention across European capitals. France, which hosts the largest Muslim population in Western Europe and has faced sustained domestic debate over immigration policy, received the speech in the context of an ongoing defence funding discussion with Washington. No formal European response to Hegseth’s immigration remarks was issued on Saturday.

Background

The Trump administration has pressed NATO members to raise defence spending to at least 5% of GDP, well above the current NATO guideline of 2%. Hegseth, a former Fox News presenter and author of the book American Crusade, has styled himself as “Secretary of War” since taking office and backed President Trump’s ongoing conflict with Iran. He attended the same Normandy American Cemetery for D-Day commemorations in 2025. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and some 400 other guests attended the June 6 event. The U.S. and France are bound by NATO’s collective defence treaty, though relations have been complicated by repeated American criticism of European security contributions.

What Happens Next

France’s Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin confirmed the country’s ongoing rearmament drive in direct response to Hegseth’s comments, signalling that Paris intends to demonstrate progress through spending commitments rather than diplomatic exchange. NATO defence ministers are scheduled to meet ahead of the alliance’s annual summit, where U.S. demands for higher European spending are expected to form the central agenda item. No formal bilateral statement between the U.S. and France was issued following Saturday’s meeting at Normandy.
