China’s Shenzhou-21 Astronauts Return to Earth

China’s Shenzhou-21 astronaut crew returned safely to Earth on Thursday after completing a six-month mission aboard the country’s Tiangong space station, according to Reuters. The landing took place at the Dongfeng landing site in Inner Mongolia after the spacecraft undocked from the orbital station earlier in the day.

The three-member crew included commander Chen Dong, along with astronauts Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe. China’s state broadcaster CCTV said the Shenzhou capsule landed successfully and recovery teams reached the astronauts shortly after touchdown. The mission was launched in November 2025 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China.

The China Manned Space Agency said the astronauts completed a series of scientific experiments and maintenance operations during their stay aboard Tiangong. Reuters reported that the crew also carried out spacewalks and technology tests linked to future long-term missions.

CCTV showed images of the capsule descending under a red-and-white parachute before landing in the desert region of Inner Mongolia. Medical teams examined the astronauts at the landing site before transporting them for further health assessments.

“The Shenzhou-21 crew is in good physical condition,” the China Manned Space Agency said in a statement carried by state media. The agency added that all planned mission objectives had been completed successfully.

Commander Chen Dong said after landing that the crew was proud to contribute to China’s space programme. “We are grateful for the support of the ground teams and the people who followed our mission,” he said in comments broadcast by CCTV.

According to Reuters, the mission formed part of China’s broader effort to expand its long-term human spaceflight capabilities and increase scientific research aboard Tiangong. China completed the main structure of the Tiangong station in 2022 and has since maintained continuous astronaut rotations in orbit.

The return came days after China launched the Shenzhou-22 mission to replace the outgoing crew. State news agency Xinhua said the incoming astronauts began handover procedures aboard the station before Shenzhou-21 departed.

Chinese officials have presented the space station programme as a symbol of the country’s technological development and strategic ambitions in space exploration. Beijing has increased investment in lunar exploration, satellite systems, and deep-space research during the past decade.

Wu Weiren, chief designer of China’s lunar exploration programme, told Chinese state media earlier this year that China planned to advance preparations for a crewed moon landing before 2030. Reuters reported that Chinese officials also aim to expand international cooperation projects linked to the Tiangong station.

The mission took place as competition in global space exploration continues to grow between China, the United States, Russia, India, and private aerospace companies. China has accelerated launches and scientific missions while developing independent space infrastructure after being excluded from the International Space Station programme led by the United States.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in previous remarks cited by Reuters that Washington and Beijing remained engaged in a strategic competition in space technology. Chinese officials have rejected accusations that the country’s space programme poses military risks and say its projects are focused on peaceful development.

Tiangong, which means “Heavenly Palace” in Chinese, operates in low-Earth orbit and supports scientific research in biology, physics, and materials science. Chinese authorities have said the station can host international experiments and foreign astronauts in future missions.

Background

China launched its first crewed space mission in 2003, becoming the third country after the United States and the former Soviet Union to independently send humans into space. The Tiangong station was assembled through multiple launches between 2021 and 2022.

Chen Dong previously became the first Chinese astronaut to spend more than 200 cumulative days in orbit, according to Chinese state media. Liu Yang was China’s first female astronaut in space after her 2012 mission aboard Shenzhou-9.

China’s space programme is managed by the China Manned Space Agency and receives strong backing from the central government. The country has also completed robotic lunar missions and a Mars rover mission during the past five years.

What Happens Next

The Shenzhou-22 crew will continue scientific operations aboard Tiangong during the next six months, according to Xinhua. Chinese officials said upcoming missions will focus on medical research, technology testing, and maintenance work on the station.

Reuters reported that China is also preparing future lunar exploration missions, including projects tied to a planned international lunar research station. Chinese space authorities are expected to announce additional launch schedules later this year.

The returning Shenzhou-21 astronauts will undergo recovery and rehabilitation programmes after spending months in orbit. State media said the crew would participate in medical observation and debriefing sessions following their mission.
