Dozens of activists from the Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla got off on the Greek island of Crete on Friday. This happened after Israeli forces stopped their ships in waters. The incident has started a debate about the legality of Israels naval blockade of Gaza. It has also raised questions about the risks faced by civilian-led aid missions.
The flotilla had than 20 boats and around 175 activists. It was stopped by naval forces on April 29 2026 while sailing in the Mediterranean Sea near Crete. The ships were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla. This is an initiative to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza. It also aims to draw attention to the crisis in the Palestinian territory.
On May 1 groups of activists were taken ashore in Crete. Greek authorities supervised this. Buses escorted by coast guards took the activists from the port to a secret location on the island. The people in charge in Israel said they stopped the ships because of the rules they have for Gaza. They have had these rules since 2009. Israel says this is necessary so that groups like Hamas do not get weapons. The people in charge also said that the boats were trying to go against these rules. So they said it was okay to stop them.
Israels Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the people on the boats would go to Greece with the help of the people in charge. He was happy that the government was helping to get the people, off the boats. The people who organized the flotilla and the activists are strongly against the operation. They say it is against law. They say the interception happened in waters far from Israels territory. So they call it an act of piracy. They also say some ships were damaged and communications were disrupted.
The boats had set sail from places like Spain and Italy. They were taking food, medicine and other important things to the people in Gaza. This trip was also supposed to tell people about what’s happening in Gaza. The situation in Gaza is really bad because of the fighting and the rules that stop things and people from moving
People from countries are saying different things about what happened when the boats were stopped. Some countries and groups that care about peoples rights are worried about the use of force in the water. They want to look into what happened. There were protests, in cities. People were saying that the activists who were taken away should be set free. They were also saying that the blockade of Gaza is not right.
Israeli authorities say these flotillas are politically motivated. They might be linked to groups. They say these missions are attempts to undermine security. They call them publicity stunts than genuine humanitarian efforts. This interception near Crete is one of the operations in recent years. Previous flotilla attempts to reach Gaza have also been stopped. Sometimes this has led to incidents. The notable one was in 2010. A raid on a flotilla led to deaths and widespread condemnation.
In this case there were no injuries or deaths. Israeli authorities said all passengers were safe.. Activists disagree. They say they were mistreated and faced conditions during the interception. Greek authorities have been careful. They agreed to take the activists.. They have not publicly supported the flotillas mission. They worked closely with officials to ensure a controlled and orderly disembarkation process.
The incident shows the tensions surrounding Gaza. Humanitarian conditions are still very bad. Aid agencies have warned of shortages of food, medical supplies and basic infrastructure. The blockade and periodic conflict have made things worse. The activists think their mission is a job and a way to protest. Many people who took part in this say they will keep fighting for people to be able to get to Gaza. They want people from countries to do something about what is happening.
Now that the activists are leaving Crete and going back to their countries people will still be asking questions about what the flotilla meant. These questions are about what’s fair helping people and how much power a country should have. This whole thing reminds us that the situation with Gaza is very complicated. It shows how hard it is, for people who want to help Gaza. The people who sailed to Gaza with food and other necessities and what they were trying to do will not be forgotten. The Global Sumud Flotilla and their efforts to help Gaza will still be something that people care about.
