Oxford Union Vows to Host Banned US Commentators

The President of the Oxford Union, Arwa Elrayess, issued a public statement on Tuesday condemning the UK Home Office’s decision to revoke the Electronic Travel Authorisations of American political commentators Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker, calling the move a direct threat to free expression. The Home Office cancelled the pair’s travel permissions on Monday, hours before they were scheduled to board flights to London. Elrayess published the statement on the Oxford Union’s Instagram page, confirming the debating society’s planned event with both men would proceed regardless.

Britain’s interior ministry stated that the authorisations had been revoked on the grounds that the pair’s presence in the UK “may not be conducive to the public good,” according to Roya News. The Home Office separately cited concerns that their presence could pose “a serious risk to public order,” the outlet reported.

Elrayess pushed back directly. “Ideas are challenged through debate, not silenced by decree,” she wrote in the letter. She added: “This event will not be cancelled. The Union will ensure this discussion takes place. Free speech does not require a visa.” The Union said members would be updated on revised arrangements for the event.

Uygur is the Turkish-American founder and host of The Young Turks, a progressive political commentary platform launched in 2002 that has grown into one of the most-watched political channels on YouTube. He also ran unsuccessfully for the US Congress in 2021. Piker, 34, known online as HasanAbi, is Uygur’s nephew and one of the most-followed political streamers on Twitch, regularly drawing large audiences for commentary on domestic and international affairs. Both men have been vocal critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

Uygur said on X that British authorities had told him he was considered a serious risk to public order because of his criticism of Israel. “I’ve been banned for criticising Israel. Are we free anymore?” he wrote. He added in a separate post: “This is oppression of western citizens by our own governments on behalf of a different country.”

Piker was equally direct on social media, writing that the UK had revoked his authorisation as well and characterising the decision as politically motivated. During a livestream, he argued that Western governments were prioritising Israel’s interests over civil liberties, describing the move as censorship and calling on viewers to draw a distinction between antisemitism and anti-Zionism.

The pair had been scheduled to appear at SXSW London, a six-day festival running through Saturday that combines music performances, film screenings, and panel discussions. Uygur had been set to participate in a session titled “Techno-Feudalism Is Here. Who Are The Lords?” on Wednesday. Piker was listed for a panel called “How The American Left Learned To Speak The Internet,” according to Roya News. Both appearances were publicly announced months before the ban was applied.

The Oxford Union statement adds institutional weight to a broader debate over the UK’s use of travel restrictions to bar foreign speakers. At least one Member of Parliament has urged the government to reverse the decision, according to a report published Monday by Roya News, though no further detail on that call was immediately available. The episode has drawn comparisons to the UK government’s decision last month to block US rapper Kanye West โ€” now known as Ye โ€” from entering the country for the Wireless Festival in London, citing his past antisemitic remarks. The festival subsequently cancelled the event entirely.

Founded in 1823, the Oxford Union has a long history of inviting controversial and internationally prominent figures to its platform, including Malcolm X and Marine Le Pen. Its stated commitment to free expression has positioned it as a recurring flashpoint in debates over speech limits in British public life.

The Union did not specify in its statement what format the rescheduled or alternative event would take, only that members would receive further information. No response from the Home Office to the Union’s statement had been published by the time of writing. Uygur and Piker had not announced any legal challenge to the travel ban as of Tuesday.

Background

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme, introduced in 2024, requires nationals of visa-exempt countries to obtain pre-travel permission before entering the United Kingdom. The Home Office retains the authority to cancel ETAs on public order or public good grounds without advance notice. The UK has seen a series of incidents targeting the Jewish community in recent months, a context the government cited in framing its broader approach to public order. Uygur, 56, ran for California’s 25th congressional district in the 2021 special election and did not advance past the primary. Piker drew controversy in 2019 after reportedly saying during a livestream that “America deserved 9/11,” a comment he later described as inappropriate.

What Happens Next

The Oxford Union has confirmed the event with Uygur and Piker will take place and said it will update members on the new arrangements, though no date or format has been announced. SXSW London continues through Saturday, though neither commentator is expected to appear at the festival given the travel ban remains in force. No Home Office statement responding to the Oxford Union had been issued as of Tuesday. A UK MP has called for the ban to be reversed, though the government had not publicly responded to that request. Both Uygur and Piker have indicated they intend to continue speaking out on the matter through their respective platforms.
