Israel Appoints Envoy to Somaliland Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Israel has just made Michael Lotem its first ambassador to Somaliland. This move is getting a lot of attention in circles. It is also increasing tension in the Horn of Africa.

The Foreign Ministry made the announcement now. This is because there is competition, in the region. Many people are watching to see what happens with the security of shipping routes nearby.

Meanwhile Somaliland is not being quiet. They are saying they are a partner for Western countries. They talk about their elections, changes of government and work against extremist groups. Some leaders in Somaliland compare their situation to Taiwans. Taiwan has made a place for itself in the world even if many countries do not officially recognize it.

So who is Lotem? He has experience in Africa having worked in countries like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Seychelles.. Do not expect him to be in Somaliland anytime soon. He will be an ambassador who works from a distance handling matters without being based in Hargeisa. So his appointment is a big deal from Israel. It shows that Israel wants to strengthen its relationship, with Somaliland. This is happening even though most countries see Somaliland as a breakaway region, not a recognized state.

Here is the story of what happened. Somaliland split from Somalia in 1991, when the government of Somalia fell apart. Since that time Somaliland has made its government and its own army. It even has its money and issues its own passports. If you look at Somaliland on paper it seems like a country.. When you talk to other countries they do not think of Somaliland as a separate country. Somalia and the rest of the world still think of Somaliland as part of Somalia. Somaliland is still not recognized by people. The people of Somaliland have their government and their own way of doing things but Somaliland is still not seen as a real country, by the world.

Meanwhile Somaliland is not sitting quietly. Somaliland is trying to show that they are a friend to Western countries. Somaliland is talking about their elections. How power is transferred peacefully. Somaliland is also working hard to stop extremism. Some leaders of Somaliland are comparing themselves to Taiwan. Taiwan is a place that has become important in the world even though it is not recognized by everyone.

If you look at Somaliland, you’ll notice it’s actually pretty stable, especially compared to the rest of Somalia. People there manage to hold elections and go about their daily work without much trouble. That really stands out, considering how chaotic things are in other parts of Somalia.

The location of Somaliland is also something that’s very important. Somaliland is right on the Gulf of Aden. A lot of ships pass through the Gulf of Aden. This makes Somaliland an important place for trade and many countries want to have good relationships, with Somaliland because of the location of Somaliland.
Not everyone’s applauding Israel’s move. Somalia definitely isn’t—officials there called it a direct attack on their sovereignty. They’re warning that moves like this could fan separatist fires, both at home and in other hotspots. Their supporters, and a handful of other countries, are backing them up and insisting that the world should keep honoring Somalia’s borders.

This all comes as the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, just off Somaliland’s coast, becomes more important than ever. It’s a skinny stretch of water but carries a huge chunk of global shipping and energy supplies. If the area gets messy, the ripple effects hit everyone’s pockets.

Somaliland isn’t just waiting for things to happen. They’re making a real effort to show the West they want to be good partners. They talk openly about how their elections work and the peaceful way they hand over power, which, let’s be honest, is something not every place in the region can claim. They’re serious about fighting extremism, too. Some of their leaders even draw parallels with Taiwan—a place that’s made a big mark despite not having official recognition everywhere. In their eyes, that’s a model worth following.

Things have been pretty unstable in the region lately. The Houthis, who are supported by Iran have been attacking ships in the Red Sea especially since the fighting started in Gaza last year. This has made some shipping companies look for routes, which are more expensive. Everyone is worried about what will happen.. Somaliland is, in a very important location, which gives them more power to negotiate with other countries. Somalilands location is becoming more and more important. This is giving Somaliland a big advantage.

. It is not just Israel that is taking notice. The United States is also watching.

Some top officials from the US Africa Command have been talking to Somalilands leaders about working together on security. The US still officially supports Somalia being one country. The US thinks Somaliland is doing a good job, on security and democracy. That is why some policymakers want to work closely with Somaliland.

If Israel and, maybe down the line, the US or other players increase their presence in Somaliland, it would help keep tabs on maritime threats and rival powers (China, for instance, already has a military foothold next door in Djibouti).

Meanwhile Somaliland is making its voice heard. They claim to be a friend to the West. They talk about their elections. How they peacefully hand over power. They also mention their efforts against groups. Some Somaliland leaders compare their situation to that of Taiwan. Taiwan has made a name for itself in the world even if not everyone officially recognizes it.

They say they’ve done a job with elections.

They point out that they’ve had transfers of power. They’ve also taken a stand against groups. Somaliland wants to show itself as an ally. Its leaders often look to Taiwan for inspiration. Taiwan found a way to make a place for itself in the world and Somaliland wants to follow that example.

Most countries are still being cautious. Recognizing Somaliland could lead to a chain reaction with separatist regions. Few governments want to get involved in that.

In the end Israels appointment of an ambassador to Somaliland doesn’t mean diplomatic recognition. However it is a step.

It shows just how important the Horn of Africa is in politics. A place where trade, security and power all intersect. This new development will likely keep Somaliland in the news. It will make everyone think about whats next for the balance of power in the Red Sea. The Horn of Africa is becoming a player, in global politics. Israels move is an one. It will be interesting to see how things unfold.
